French Press Measurements at a Glance
French press measurements should follow the water you actually add, not the cup count printed on the box. Moav's practical starting point is 1 gram of coffee for every 15 grams of water. That means 23 grams of coffee for 350 grams of water, 33 grams for 500 grams, and 60 grams for 900 grams.
Prefer a lighter cup? Keep the water amount fixed and move to 1:17. The chart below gives both starting points.

Each coffee amount is rounded to the nearest gram after the division. The useful number here is the first column. A press advertised as “32 oz” may not be intended to hold 32 fluid ounces of water plus grounds while brewing. Check its maximum-fill or headspace instruction before deciding which row is yours.
Why French Press Cup Labels Are Confusing
A kitchen measuring cup in the United States is 8 fluid ounces. A mug might hold more or less. Meanwhile, a manufacturer may use a much smaller “cup” when naming a French press. The three objects can all say cup while discussing different amounts, which is not exactly a triumph of kitchen diplomacy.
Take one current product line as an example. The 2026 Bodum catalog lists these Chambord sizes:

That is a Bodum example, not a definition that applies to every French press. Read the capacity on your own box, base, product page, or manual. Metric volume is usually the cleanest clue. Also separate capacity from working water amount: the maker may require space above the brew.
One more label trap is worth clearing. Fluid ounces measure volume; ordinary ounces measure mass. When a press says 32 oz, it ordinarily means fluid capacity. Do not put 32 ounces by weight of coffee anywhere near it unless you are opening a remarkably overcaffeinated café.
Coffee Measurements for Actual Ounces of Water
Sometimes the ounce number really does describe the water you plan to pour. In that case, conversion is straightforward. The National Institute of Standards and Technology gives 29.57 milliliters as the approximate equivalent of 1 US fluid ounce.
The table below converts actual water volume, then calculates coffee at 1:15 and 1:17. It does not tell you that a press with the same advertised number should be filled to that level.

For this chart, we use the practical kitchen approximation that 1 milliliter of water is approximately 1 gram. Temperature and dissolved minerals shift water density slightly, which is why approximately belongs in the sentence.
The Formula for Any French Press Size
You do not need a chart for every possible carafe. Weigh the water you will brew with, then use one of these formulas:
- Stronger Moav starting point: water grams ÷ 15 = coffee grams
- Lighter starting point: water grams ÷ 17 = coffee grams
Suppose your normal fill is 625 grams of water. At 1:15, the calculation is 625 ÷ 15 = 41.67 grams, which rounds to 42 grams of coffee. At 1:17, 625 ÷ 17 = 36.76, which rounds to 37 grams.
Write down the result before changing anything to taste. If tomorrow's cup uses a different water amount, grind, steep time, and dose, the detective work becomes needlessly theatrical. Change one variable, keep a short note, and give your palate a fair comparison.

How Much Coffee Goes in a 32 oz French Press?
The honest answer begins with a small question: does 32 oz mean water, or does it mean the advertised size of the vessel?
If you are pouring a true 32 US fluid ounces of water, NIST's conversion puts that at about 946 milliliters. The calculations are:
- 946 ÷ 15 = 63.07, so use 63 grams of coffee at 1:15.
- 946 ÷ 17 = 55.65, so use 56 grams at 1:17.
If “32 oz” is the brewer's advertised capacity, do not automatically pour in 946 milliliters. Grounds take space, and your model may specify a maximum line or required headspace. Measure the permitted amount you truly use, then divide that number by 15 or 17.
For comparison, Moav's existing full routine uses 900 grams of water and 60 grams of coffee in a nominal 34-ounce, 8-cup press. That leaves room rather than treating the product capacity as a command to fill to the brim.
Measure Your Own Press Once
The most reliable chart is the one based on your brewer, your safe fill line, and the batch you actually drink. You can make it in a few minutes with cool water:
- Read the model instructions. Find its maximum fill, required headspace, and any minimum-batch guidance. Those limits outrank a generic online chart.
- Set the empty, dry press on a scale and tare it. The display should return to zero.
- Add cool water to your normal permitted brew level. Record the grams. There is no reason to handle hot water while measuring capacity.
- Divide the water weight by 15. Round the result to the nearest gram. Repeat with 17 if you want a lighter reference dose.
- Calculate one smaller batch. Measure the water level you use on a quiet morning or for one mug, then run the same division.
- Make a cabinet card. Write “full” and “small” water and coffee numbers on it. Tomorrow's half-awake version of you has now received an extremely modest promotion.
No scale? Use a metric measuring jug to find the milliliters of water at your working level, then use the same approximate 1 ml-to-1 g shortcut. A scale is tidier because it measures water directly in the press, but the formula does not change.
What Does One Coffee Scoop Mean?
There is no universal coffee-scoop mass. Scoops differ in volume, and the same scoop can hold different masses of ground coffee depending on the beans, roast, grind, and whether the grounds are level or heaped. NIST can tell us that a US tablespoon is about 14.79 milliliters; that volume conversion cannot tell us how many grams of your coffee sit inside it.
If your press came with a scoop, use the dose stated in that model's manual. A branded scoop instruction belongs to that scoop and brewer; it should not be promoted to a law of breakfast.
You can also calibrate the scoop you already own:
- Put a small cup on a scale and tare it.
- Add three level scoops of the coffee you normally use.
- Divide the displayed weight by three. That is the average grams per scoop for this coffee and scoop.
- Divide your target coffee grams by that average.
For example, if three scoops weigh 30 grams, one averages 10 grams. A 60-gram batch takes six of those scoops. If a different coffee gives a noticeably different three-scoop weight, update the card. This method is less convenient once and more dependable every morning afterward.
Can You Part-Fill a Large French Press?
The ratio itself scales down cleanly. If you add 450 grams of water, use 30 grams of coffee at 1:15 because 450 ÷ 15 = 30. The fact that the carafe could hold more does not change that relationship.
The brewer's operating limits are a separate question. Some designs may carry minimum-fill or plunger instructions, so consult the manual rather than assuming every model behaves identically at a very low fill. If the smaller batch is permitted, record its actual water amount instead of taking half the advertised capacity. Half of a label is not necessarily half of the normal working fill.
Likewise, “two cups” needs a real volume before it needs coffee math. Fill the two mugs with cool water, pour that into a measuring jug or onto the tared scale in the press, and note the total. A pair of 250-milliliter mugs needs a different batch from two 350-milliliter mugs, despite both orders sounding exactly like “two coffees.”

Hot-Water and Glass-Press Check
Follow the instructions for your model. Bodum's current DOURO instructions, for example, specify a flat surface, hot water at about 92–96°C, at least 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) of headspace, and slow lowering of the plunger. Glass models can carry additional utensil and inspection instructions.
Set the press on a stable, dry, heat-resistant surface. Do not use chipped, cracked, or otherwise damaged glass. Keep the spout directed away from you while pressing, lower the plunger slowly, and do not force it. Use the maker's maximum fill and approved stirring utensil rather than substituting a generic chart for the manual.
