A fixed 30-second wait after boiling does not guarantee this range: water volume, kettle material, room conditions, and altitude change the result. Without a thermometer, follow the press or kettle manufacturer's method and treat the result as an estimate. If a dark roast tastes harsh, test the next brew near 195–200°F while holding ratio, grind, and time still. If a light roast tastes sharp or underdeveloped, test a warmer brew within the stated range rather than assuming every light roast needs maximum heat.

Step-by-Step: The 4-Minute Method

  1. Heat your water to 195–205°F. While it heats, grind your coffee coarse.
  2. Preheat the press with a splash of hot water, swirl, and dump it out. A warm carafe keeps the brew from cooling mid-steep.
  3. Add the coffee and set the press on your scale. Tare to zero.
  4. Start the timer and pour all the water in one steady stream, wetting all the grounds. Give it one gentle stir with a spoon.
  5. Lid on, plunger up. Rest the lid on top without pressing — it holds heat in.
  6. At 4 minutes, press slowly. Take 15–20 seconds to push the plunger down. If it fights back hard, your grind was too fine.

Set the press on a stable, dry surface, hold it as its manufacturer directs, and keep hands and face away from the spout. Do not force a resistant plunger. Stop and check the grind, filter assembly, and press instructions before trying again; the vessel contains very hot liquid.
