How many scoops go in a French press?
Start with one 2-tablespoon scoop for every 150 grams (about 5 US fluid ounces) of water. That is Moav's 1:15 French press starting ratio when each level tablespoon holds roughly 5 grams of coarse coffee. For 600 grams of water, use about four of those scoops. If your scoop is a different size, measure it in level tablespoons first. Scoop counts are convenient estimates, so keep the scoop, leveling method, coffee, and water amount consistent.
The short version is useful at 6 a.m. The longer version matters because “one scoop” is not a unit until you know the scoop's capacity.

This chart starts with the stronger 1:15 ratio used in Moav's published French press guide. Coffee grams are water grams divided by 15. The spoon columns then use the working conversion in Starbucks' coffee press guide: 2 tablespoons of coarse grounds equal 10 grams in that recipe.

The spoon counts are rounded to the nearest quarter-scoop or half-tablespoon. They are not laboratory conversions. Different beans, roast levels, grind settings, and heaping habits can put a different mass into the same volume.

What does a coffee scoop actually hold?
A scoop is a piece of kitchen equipment, not a standardized coffee dose. It may hold one tablespoon, two tablespoons, or a maker-specific amount. A rounded scoop also holds more than a level scoop, but “rounded” does not tell two people to build the same mound.
A US tablespoon is a defined volume. The National Institute of Standards and Technology conversion table gives one tablespoon as approximately 14.79 milliliters. That fixes the spoon's volume; it does not fix the mass of coffee inside it.
Before using the chart, identify your tool:
- If the scoop is marked 1 Tbsp, use the third column.
- If it is marked 2 Tbsp, use the fourth column.
- If the manual defines the scoop, follow that model-specific instruction.
- If it is unmarked, use a real measuring tablespoon instead. You only need to do this once to remove the mystery.
Keep every scoop level unless the brewer's own instructions explicitly say rounded. Drag a straight edge across the top rather than pressing the coffee down. Packing changes how much coffee fits and makes tomorrow's dose harder to repeat.
Why tablespoons and grams do not convert perfectly
Volume tells you how much space the grounds occupy. Grams tell you their mass. Coarse particles leave different gaps from fine particles, and coffees with different roast and bean characteristics do not necessarily pack into a spoon the same way.
That is why the Starbucks guide's 2 tablespoons = 10 grams is best treated as a practical reference for its recipe, not a universal density law. Its full coffee-press recipe uses 10 grams per 180 milliliters of water, or 1:18 by mass. Moav's chart borrows the convenient 5-grams-per-tablespoon estimate but keeps this site's bolder 1:15 starting ratio. Those are two separate choices, stated separately.
There is room to choose a different baseline. A Specialty Coffee Association technical explainer describes 60 grams per liter, equivalent to about 1:16.7, as a commonly written brewing ratio for drip and immersion coffee. That does not make every French press taste best at exactly 1:16.7. It gives you a well-described reference point. The coffee, grind, steep, and your preference still decide where you stay.
How to use any scoop without a scale
Use this routine for a scoop whose capacity you know:
- Measure the water first. Use the same permitted fill line, measuring jug, or marked vessel every time.
- Choose a starting ratio. Use the chart's 1:15 dose for a bolder cup. For a lighter start, use about 10 percent less coffee.
- Level every scoop. Do not alternate between flat and heaped scoops.
- Brew with the same grind and timing. Moav's complete French press routine covers those steps.
- Taste before changing anything. If the cup is stronger than you want, remove a quarter- or half-scoop next time. If it is too light, add the same small amount.
- Write down the result. “Four level scoops to this fill line” is more useful tomorrow than trying to remember whether the last scoop looked generous.
The 10 percent lighter shortcut is simple arithmetic. At 1:15, 600 grams of water takes 40 grams of coffee. Reducing that dose by 10 percent removes 4 grams, leaving 36 grams, close to the 35 grams produced by a 1:17 calculation. With a 2-tablespoon scoop estimated at 10 grams, that is about 3 1/2 scoops instead of four.
How should you adjust a scoop recipe?
Change the dose only after the routine is repeatable. If one brew uses a heaped scoop, the next uses a level scoop, and the water stops at a different line, the cup may change without telling you why.
For a controlled adjustment:
- Keep water, grind, steep time, and pouring routine fixed.
- Change the coffee by one-quarter of a 2-tablespoon scoop, or about half a tablespoon using this chart's estimate.
- Brew once and compare.
- Keep the new dose only if it moves the cup in the direction you wanted.
Do not use extra steeping time as a casual substitute for more coffee. Dose and contact time affect the brew differently. If the dose seems right but the cup is still unpleasant, return to the full brewing guide and troubleshoot the grind and timing one variable at a time.
When is a scale worth buying?
You do not need a coffee-specific scale to make a good French press. A consistent scoop and a measured water amount can produce a repeatable morning cup.
A basic kitchen scale becomes useful when:
- the same number of scoops gives noticeably different results between coffees;
- you switch among several batch sizes;
- fractional scoops are more annoying than helpful;
- you want to compare 1:15 with 1:17 accurately; or
- you are already weighing ingredients elsewhere in the kitchen.
The scale does not improve coffee by itself. It replaces an uncertain volume estimate with a repeatable mass. If your four level scoops and usual fill line already give you the cup you want, write that recipe down and keep making it.
